Media Statements (substantially drafted by myself)

"The Australian Unemployed Workers Union Queer Caucus notes with concern the platform ABC's Media Watch has given to former Fairfax journalist Julie Szego, in its continued reinforcement of the transphobic side in the "debate" whether trans people can exist in society and live with dignity as their true selves. The Trans Justice Project has penned an open letter making clear objections to this kind of both-sidesism against a vulnerable minority, and we hereby declare our endorsement, noting that trans people are over-represented in welfare statistics, and still do not have due respect from state governments in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia in regards to documentation, even with recent gains. Rhetoric that minimises neo-nazi and transphobic actions, and muddies the water about the people who join such actions, does nothing to help useful discourse, and is certainly not an argument a so-called media watchdog in any capacity should entertain. We encourage the ABC to take action to rectify the situation, investigate claims by transphobes about "peaking" a senior producer of Media Watch around the ACON episode, and potentially assigning another host without a history of transphobia when trans issues become pertinent content for the show."
AUWU stands united with our queer caucus who have prepared the following statement: Today’s attacks on the trans community by Elon Musk are unprecedented. Twitter is no longer a safe place for trans and non-binary people. GNC people do not enjoy full acceptance in society, and are greatly represented in unemployment statistics, so we are compelled to respond. The affront to decency in announcing the open season against trans people at the end of Trans Awareness Week is especially galling. There is no room for bigotry that seeks to silence and discriminate against minorities. The AUWU stands with our trans and non-binary siblings, children, and members, and opposes the reckless and vindictive billionaire class. We call on the greater trade union movement to stand with us in solidarity, as the reserve labour force that capital demands, against social, employment, and workplace discrimination experienced by trans and non-binary workers.
